Seawolves Dunk
Dragons
Drexel vs. Stony Brook University
Friday, January 30th
Drexel came out hitting, taking
play to the Seawolves early in the first period. But it was Drexel’s
nemesis, a penalty, which put SB on the power play resulting in
power play goal with 5 minutes into the period. SB upped their lead
to 2-0. Drexel’s leading scorer, Alex Cohen, got Drexel back to
within one on the power play (Blazic, Mansur), deflecting Blazic’s
point shot over the goalie’s left shoulder.
In the second period, Drexel’s strong fore-check enabled Luigi Tirro
(Simone) to pick up a loose puck in the slot and beat SB’s goalie to
tie the game. The strong fore-check continued to give the Seawolves
fits. And then, just as Drexel seemed poised to take the lead, the
Dragons surrendered two short-handed goals, the second coming with
10 seconds left in the period, deflating Drexel’s efforts.
The third period was all Stony Brook as the game ended 8-2.
Dragons Roast
Panthers
Drexel vs.
Pittsburgh
Saturday, January 31st
The
Dragons played host to the Pitt Panthers at Drexel’s Concrete
Palace. The Panthers were looking to avenge their December loss to
Drexel in Pittsburgh. Showing no signs of misery from Friday’s
defeat, Drexel jumped to a 2-0 first period lead on goals from Bruno
Petrillo (Sarnatora) and a power play goal from Zak Blazic (Lawrie,
Cohen.).
Bruno’s second goal (McMahon) gave Drexel a commanding 3-0 lead. The
Panthers bit back, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game at
the end of two periods. Just as he did in Pittsburgh, Alex Cohen
(Lawrie) snaked a smart-puck literally through the Pitt goalie
scoring what eventually was the winning goal with seven minutes left
in the game. Thereafter, the Dragons chased the Panthers. Drexel
scored twice more in the period, both power plays, Cohen (Stollings)
and Lawrie (Allatt) as Drexel feasted on Panther stew, 6-2.
Kudos to Drexel back-up goalie Chris Stollings who stopped 30 Pitt
shots in a fine effort.
